Fugaku Fukei Zuba (Fugaku Landscape Design Tsuba) by Teitei Sai Myōchin Munetaka

      Title: Fugaku Fukei Zutsuba
      Artist: Teiteisai Myochin Munetaka
Date: Late Edo to Early Meiji Period (Late 19th Century)
Munetaka was a master craftsman born in Edo in 1818 (Bunsei 1) and active until around 1887 (Meiji 20).

Design: Featuring the sacred peak Mount Fuji (Fugaku) as the central theme, a hoe (kuwa) and a straw hat (sandogasa) used in farming are placed in the foreground. This creates an evocative composition contrasting scenes of daily life and travel among the common people with Mount Fuji, an object of reverence.
Technique: Using an iron base plate, the pattern is carved in relief using the sukidashi technique. Gold and silver inlay is then applied to depict the clouds and the silhouette of Mount Fuji.
About the Artist: The Myochin family was a renowned lineage entrusted by the shogunate with producing armor. Utilizing this expertise, Sōshū created numerous exquisitely crafted and dignified sword fittings.
