Iron Sukashi Tsuba Yasudai Edo era 1700s with NBTHK Tokubetsu Hozon Tosogu
Fish Roe Pattern Tsuba, Red Copper Fish Roe Ground, Specially Designated Preservation Sword Fittings, High Grade
Though seemingly plain at first glance, this tsuba requires considerable skill to hammer the fish roe pattern uniformly without misalignment.
The sides also feature hammered fish roe patterns with gold color painting.
Yasuda was a retainer craftsman for the Tokugawa Shogunate, alongside Gotō, Yoshioka, and Hirata. The materials used are top-grade, suggesting this tsuba was likely intended as an offering.
Accompanied by a recent, hard-to-obtain appraisal certificate from the Nippon Tōhō (Japanese Sword Preservation Society) for Special Preservation Sword Fittings, this is a tsuba highly favored by expert collectors.
