The Shōami school, alongside the Uchū school, is known as one of the two major schools of tsuba making. It flourished from the Muromachi period through to the late Edo period, and during the Edo period, its practitioners migrated and spread widely throughout the country. This piece is attributed to the Shōami school that migrated to Kyoto and is believed to date from around the mid-Edo period.
It features an auspicious noshi motif exquisitely rendered in gold cloth-grain inlay, flanked by chrysanthemum designs. This is an excellent example of an openwork tsuba embodying good fortune, a motif favored from the early to mid-Edo period.
This piece, beautifully rendered in gold inlay, is a work to be enjoyed visually and would be a splendid addition to any sword mountings.
