Left and Right Demon Tile Transparent Immortal Group Tsuba by Minamoto no Masatsugu Edo 1600s NBTHK

This tsuba is by Watanabe Ōmi no Daimyō Gen Masatsugu, a master metal caster commissioned by the Tokugawa shogunate. Born in Kyoto in 1646 (Shōhō 3), Masatsugu was the son of Masatoshi, also a metal caster. By 1679 (Enpō 7), he was a renowned caster employed by the Hirosaki Domain (Tsugaru Domain). He produced numerous works such as Buddhist altar fittings, vases, and ornaments until his death in Hirosaki in 1704. The bronze shachihoko (dolphins) adorning Edo Castle (later transferred to Nagoya Castle) were also crafted by Masatoshi and Masatsugu, father and son. This piece was likely commissioned by the domain in Hirosaki. It depicts various immortal figures, including a horse emerging from a gourd and the Crane Immortal.
