What kind of sword should you choose first? This section covers what to look for when selecting your very first sword.

I recommend starting with a “katana.”
The next best choice is a “wakizashi,” but I don’t recommend starting with a “tantō.” “Tachi” are usually expensive, so they aren’t really suitable for a first purchase.

Long swords have many features to admire, and you can appreciate them from top to bottom. Moreover, since most people have a vivid image of the katana when they think of Japanese swords, holding one in your hands is likely to give you a great sense of satisfaction.

Wakizashi offer a similar experience, but they feel slightly lacking compared to katana. However, Oosuriagemumei (swords where the nakago has been polished, erasing the maker’s signature) are a close second, as some wakizashi are reasonably priced yet well-crafted.

Tantō are best suited for connoisseurs. Once you get used to them, you’ll realize that their short length is packed with visual appeal and beauty, but beginners won’t grasp that right away. You’ll likely feel a sense of something missing.
